Playoff Scenarios

Halfway through the season and still plenty of great lacrosse to be played. But just for fun, let's map out a hypothetical. If the season was to end today, what would the playoff picture be? The top two teams in each section will have a home game for the opening round and determining the teams is based on overall section records only. And only the top three D-I teams will be allowed to enter the PIAA state playoff. Without any further ado, here's what the D-I and D-II brackets would look like:

                              Division I

Pine Richland (D-I North #4) @ Sewickley Academy (D-I South #1)
Upper St. Clair (D-I South #3) @ Seneca Valley (D-I North #2)
Pittsburgh Central Catholic (D-I South #4) @ North Allegheny (D-I North #1)
Franklin Regional (D-I North #3) @ Mt. Lebanon (D-I South #2)

                              Division II

Cathedral Prep (D-II North #4) @ Greensburg Central Catholic (D-II South #1)
Chartiers Valley/Quaker Valley (D-II South #3) @ Butler (D-II North #2)
Erie McDowell (D-II North #3) @ CV/QV (D-II South #2)
Baldwin (D-II South #4) @ Hampton (D-II North #1)

This bracket is based on current section records and head-to-head match-ups. Many teams are only one big section win away from knocking out one of the listed teams above. For instance, if North Hills beats Erie McDowell next week and doesn't lose to Shaler, the Indians will hop into the playoff picture. And when Chartiers Valley and Quaker Valley face-off against one another on Wednesday, a home playoff game is very much on the line. Let's not forget, we still have yet to see Sewickley and Mt. Lebo play each other. And teams like Peters Township and Shady Side Academy are very much in the picture for joining the postseason party. So there shouldn't be any doubt that this playoff prediction will likely look very different come mid-May.
