Tonight features an interesting mix of section action but one game seems to stand out above the rest. Below are the scores from Monday's games and a list of tonight's section action. But here is an in-depth preview of the must see match-up of the evening:
Greensburg Central Catholic (4-0, 7-1) @ Baldwin (4-0, 6-0)
Two teams, both unbeaten in section play, will face off for what could be an early glimpse of this season's D-II title game. And even though both sides have already begun to separate from the rest of the D-II pack, this one game will elevate one side to sole possession of first place in both the section and the division.
The Centurions have already knocked off two of the top teams in D-II Section II. Last week, GCC hosted Chartiers Valley (3-1, 6-3) and dealt the Colts its only section loss following a solid 10-4 win. And three days prior to that, the Centurions stormed into Quaker Valley (4-1, 6-1) and handed the Quakers its first loss on the year, 11-9. The Centurions only loss of the year was the opening game of the season, a 7-6 road loss to D-I giant Shady Side Academy.
Baldwin hasn't played the toughest of competition but the Highlanders have consistently played smart and stout lacrosse. Defensively, Baldwin averages less than four goals allowed per game and the Highlanders average over 13 goals per game on the offensive side of the ball. Baldwin has been contained to under-10 points only once.
Much of that is because of Baldwin's offensive triple threat, three senior attackmen each with over ten goals in six games. Craig Madison has 12 goals and two assists and Garrett Wild has 14 goals and five assists for 19 points. But Cody Golon has been nothing short of phenomenal. Golon has yet to be held scoreless and has 22 goals and 21 assists for 43 points. Golon has scored six goals in a game, twice this season.
But GCC has plenty of its own offensive firepower. The Centurions have six players with at least 10 points or more on the year. Senior attackman Christopher Johnston leads the team in goals with 23 and six assists for 29 points followed by senior midfielder John Bursch with 16 goals and 14 assists for a team-high 30 points. Senior midfielder Matt Pezze has also been a major contributor with 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points along with junior midfielder Phil Croker who's tallied 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points.
The last time GCC and Baldwin met was back in 2008 when the Highlanders hosted the Centurions and beat GCC in overtime, 6-5.
