Baseball typically gets canceled for rain, not lacrosse. As the rains continued to pummel the area, Tuesday night featured a few D-II section contests including Baldwin's continued quest for the coveted undefeated season with another big win. Section play continues tonight in D-I when a handful of giants go head-to-head.
Division II Section I
Baldwin 17, Latrobe 7
Baldwin now stands as the lone unbeaten team in all of D-II following a road section victory last night over Latrobe, 17-7. Eight different Highlanders scored goals and ten men found their way on the score sheet but three specific names stick out above the rest. Garrett Wild scored four goals and added an assist to bring his season tally to 16 points and John Pust dished out five assists. And Cody Golon was absolutely unstoppable after putting on an offensive clinic in front of the Latrobe goal with an astounding six-goal and five-assist performance. In only five games, Golon now averages over seven points per game with 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points.
The Highlanders (3-0, 5-0) continue section play with a home game against Norwin (0-2, 0-3) Thursday night. This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
Latrobe (0-3, 0-6) has yet to hold an opponent to under 10 goals in each of its first six games. And the Wildcats next match certainly won't be any easier than its previous few. On Thursday night, Latrobe continues section play when it travels to Quaker Valley (2-1, 3-1). This will also be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Canon-McMillan 10, Seton LaSalle 8
Of the four Tuesday night games, this was the only close one. The Macs escaped with a narrow victory at home over section rival Seton LaSalle, 10-8. Canon-Mac (1-2, 3-3) bounced back nicely after a dismal 16-1 non-section defeat at Butler on Saturday. The win also halted a three-game skid that included back-to-back section losses on the road. Now, the Macs will focus solely on its next section game at Winchester Thurston (0-2, 1-2) next Tuesday.
But before Canon-Mac can take on Winchester Thurston, the Bears will travel to Seton LaSalle (0-2, 2-4) on Thursday. Last season, the Rebels were beaten by the Bears, 11-3, at Winchester Thurston. Seton LaSalle has now lost three-straight, all of which have been determined by two goals or less.
Chartiers Valley 14, Norwin 2
Ever since the Colts lost its season opener, Chartiers Valley has won six-straight and has outscored the opposition 72 to 23. And little changed on Tuesday night when the Colts traveled to and picked through the Norwin defense for a big section win, 14-2. The celebration will likely be short lived because on Thursday, CV (3-0, 6-1) heads out to Greensburg Central Catholic (3-0, 5-1) for a pivotal section fixture. The Centurions, like the Colts, lost its opener to a D-I team and haven't lost since. When the two sides faced off last season, CV prevailed at home in a 9-7 thriller.
Norwin (0-2, 0-3) still continues its early season struggles but will play the potential role of giant-killer on Thursday when it travels to unbeaten Baldwin (3-0, 5-0). The Knights, however, average only two goals a game and give up 17 goals a night.
Division II Section II
Butler 16, Taylor Allderdice 1
Last season's D-II champion has finally regained its winning ways. After beginning the season with only one win in its first five games, Butler has recorded back-to-back wins with a 16-1 scoreline. Before the consecutive wins, the Tornadoes (2-1, 3-4) were embarrassed at home with a section loss in overtime to newcomer Indiana, 4-3. And ever since, Butler has played up to its potential and once again looks and plays like a potential contender for the D-II title. Butler will look to pick up another section win on Thursday when it travels to winless Shaler (0-2, 0-5). The Tornadoes have won the last five meetings against the Titans.
For Taylor Allderdice (0-3, 1-5), life isn't getting any easier. The Dragons have dropped two straight to tough D-II teams (10-5 to GCC, 16-1 @ Butler) and have two more tough matchups on the horizon. Tonight the Dragons travel to D-I power Pine Richland (1-1, 4-2) and on Friday it hosts Quaker Valley (2-1, 3-1) in non-section play. Allderdice has never played the Rams but the Dragons did beat the Quakers in the last meeting between the two, 9-5 in 2009.
